Block One

Block One for the Black and White Pop quilt is a simple four patch. But it's huge. Each square is 9". It is big, loud and awesome. And I really like this black and white idea.

Black and White Block of the Month quilt

Mom's friends from church are doing a beginner quilt along. Ladies get together every month and learn about sewing. We had our first meeting the other week. We got the quilt pattern that we are going to do. While they were discussing quilting and sewing and picking out fabrics I was online via my phone looking at fabric trying to decide what color scheme to go with. I decided on doing a black and white quilt with some pop of color. After going to the fabric store on Saturday I ended up buying three bright yellow, six different black and six different whites. I also found the perfect backing that is black and white. That fabric got me really excited about doing this sampler quilt in black and white. Mom seemed hesitant about the whole black and white quilt idea. But it's my quilt and I think it is going to be awesome.

The quilt design.

The quilt we are doing is called "Pioneer Sampler" designed by TK Harrison for The pattern has directions for two different sizes. The baby quilt finishes to 36"x45". The finished blocks for the baby quilt are 9". The twin quilt finishes to 63"x81". The finished blocks for the twin quilt are 18". I decided to do the twin size quilt. I am not going to put the border on my quilt. I'll bind it right after putting the blocks together. So my quilt will be approximately 54"x72". That's 4 1/2 feet x 6 feet. It's a nice size quilt.

So fabrics ...

This is my backing. I LOVE this fabric so much.

Isn't it a lovely pile.
All of my fabrics are geometric patterns. I think that will work best with the quilt.

The Whites.

The Blacks.

The Pop of Yellows.
With the yellows I was looking for the base color to be the pop of color in the fabric. But I stumbled upon that white/yellow in the top left corner and it fit so well. And I need a third yellow.

Today I sketched out the blocks on graph paper and colored them with my color scheme. Now I have a better idea of what fabric colors will go where in my quilt. And I really do love this b/w/y idea so much. It's going to be awesome!

Aviatrix update

This past week I've been close enough that I have been squaring up blocks for my Aviatrix Medallion quilt. But there is one problem. I didn't use an exact 1/4" seam allowance. So the blocks are slightly smaller than they need to be. That has been frustrating. With Mom's help, I decided to still square up all the blocks. And I'll adjust the frame in between with the background gray fabric. I haven't sewn border 6 (butterflies; the last border) yet. Before I sew anymore I need to find the 1/4" seam foot that goes on my sewing machine. I guess I need to start using that when I quilt to get a more accurate seam. I still like this quilt it won't be perfect but it's mine so that's okay.

the original quilt
I was also thinking of labeling my quilts. I need to find a good way for making labels.

Happy New Year!

Hello! It's 2015! I've kind of been thinking about some goals I'd like to set for the next year. So in no particular order ...

  • Take a photo every day using the FMS photo a day prompts. I usually do okay at taking a photo every day. I really enjoy it. But then there are days where I don't feel inspired so I don't take any.
  • Finish a couple of quilts. Mainly I'd like to get my Starburst quilt quilted. And I'd like to finish my Aviatrix Medallion quilt. I need to buy backing and binding for it. And then I have a kit that I'd like to make. It is a Valentine's quilt so I think I'd like to make that in January.
  • For Christmas I got the Farmer's Wife quilt book. I love it so much. I saw on Pinterest some people took the book and spiral bound the spine. I thought that was a brilliant idea. So I plan on doing that in the next couple of weeks. Anyways, in the next year I want to figure out what colors I want to do my quilt. Right now I'm thinking cool colors with black.
  • Save more money. I'd like to have a better savings. I feel like I'm living paycheck to paycheck when I don't have to. I can fidget with my budget and not spend money on frivolous things. I know it'll be hard for a month or so but I can do it.
  • I'd like to journal something everyday. I got out of the habit and I miss it. I hope that having it on a Google Document will help because I have access to it on my phone.
  • Get room situated. I need to put some things away still. I want to buy new dressers sometime this year. I feel like my clothes don't fit where they are supposed to.
  • Blog more. I'd like to use my blog more. Take photos of quilt projects. Review books. Feature Instagram photos. Write tiny stories. And just general talk.
  • Finish Brian's mission book. It has been over a year and I haven't done anything with it for a long while. I need to get it done so Brian can have it.
  • Read the Book of Mormon. I've never read the whole BOM. I feel like I need to do that and figure out where I stand in the church.
